Connections
This year's birthday was promising to be very unhappy due to some family stuff going on. However!

The DH whisked me away in the nick of time to Victoria, and treated me not only to an amazing dinner but to a trip to the Royal Victoria Museum which was hosting an exhibit from the British Museum (I have no words to describe the awe I felt when gazing on the bust of Marcus Aurelius, or exquisite Islamic manuscripts, or Egyptian mummies, or, or, or...I have always been very sad that I've studied all these things, and yet have never seen the originals). This was followed by the Imax film "Journey to Mecca", which is about Ibn Battuta, and it just so happens I have his chronicles sitting on my bookshelf.

It was a most excellent birthday.

As well, thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes. I was quite delighted to sit down at the computer last night and find them all!

It was really interesting - the only part I didn't like was the modern art, but ya know, it's hard to compare with the wonders of the past.

Belated Happy Your Day :). It sounds like a perfect one, and especially since you weren't expecting much. somehow those are the most amazing ones, when it happens like that. It almost makes birthdays worth it :D

*whispers* To be honest, I seldom expect much on my birthday. It has been forgotten in the past, and when it falls on Mother's Day, well, I know to expect a back seat, which is fine. But, to have such a nice day was a real treat!

Ooh, I bet the chronicles of Ibn Battuta will make/are making fascinating reading. I'd like to read them one day...

I was thrilled that this movie is bringing Ibn Battuta to so many people - he was an amazing man! And, as well, because the movie was about the Haj, I hope it will bring more understanding that Islam isn't a religion to be feared (not that I am Muslim, but I have friends and teachers who are, and there are so many beautiful aspects to their faith...)
